Abon and Lucille Bridges Award

Mariam Magane – $5,000

Mariam Magane, an eighth-grade student at Kindezi West in Atlanta, Georgia, is a courageous leader who understands the power of using her voice to create change. She serves as president of the Student Government Association, captain of the dance team, and founder of her own nonprofit organization, Mariam’s Big Heart Inc, all while encouraging others to lead with confidence and purpose. When Mariam learned that her school’s Beta Club might not be able to visit the Georgia State Capitol, she took action. She wrote a thoughtful and persuasive letter to her principal advocating for the educational opportunity. Because of her leadership, the club visited the Capitol, gained firsthand insight into state government, and learned about civic opportunities such as the Georgia Page Program. The experience also opened the door for students to return to the Capitol and continue their civic engagement. Mariam was later selected to speak at the Georgia State Capitol on behalf of Georgia charter schools. She advocated for increased and equitable school funding, explaining why her school and its students deserve continued support. Although she has faced criticism from peers and the challenges that can come with standing apart, Mariam has remained confident in her convictions and committed to representing her classmates. By identifying obstacles, speaking truthfully, and advocating for opportunities that benefit others, Mariam exemplifies the courageous changemaking honored by the Abon and Lucille Bridges Award. Her leadership has already expanded opportunities for her fellow students, and she is only beginning to make her mark!
